Alexandra House, Inc.

Established in 1977, Alexandra House is now one of the largest domestic and sexual violence organizations in Minnesota; and the only domestic and sexual violence program in Anoka County. While they are located in the cities of Blaine and Anoka, Alexandra House works with victims of domestic and sexual violence throughout the metro area and the state. The mission of Alexandra House is to empower victims of domestic and sexual violence and inspire social change, through education, support, and advocacy. Alexandra House envisions a world where violence against women and children is unacceptable. Alexandra House has a wide variety of programs and services.

They provide hospital-based advocacy, where Alexandra House staff and volunteers are there for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence who present to local hospitals and designated Allina clinics. Advocates respond 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to provide support and advocacy services to victims in any treatment care unit within the hospitals as well as any designated areas of the clinics. Their Housing and Supportive Services program aims to assist families with long-term safety, stability and self-sufficiency with employment support and training, transportation, financial assistance, housing assistance and rental subsidies, system navigation, and everyday problem solving is only a fraction of the support our in-home advocates provide.

Alexandra House also provides Financial/Basic Needs Assistance, including a food shelf, personal care and household items, prescription assistance, gas cards, cell phones, and more. Their 24-hour Emergency Shelter / 24-hour Help Line includes crisis intervention, safety planning, support groups, transportation to safety and appointments, child care, assistance in obtaining needed medical, housing, legal, financial and other community assistance, information, and referalls. With their Elder Abuse Services Program, Alexandra House offers client-centered advocacy services and in-home case management services to elder victims of abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation. Services include legal assistance, basic needs assistance, arranging transportation to and from appointments, identifying and securing housing, offering emotional support, and connecting clients with other government and community programs for additional services. They also provide Civil Legal Advocacy, which includes providing assistance in filing protective orders, accompaniment to hearings, free legal representation and advice, and information regarding civil legal options.

Alexandra House’s Criminal Justice Intervention/Lethality Assessment Program provides advocacy following a domestic assault (24-hours/day) and throughout court proceedings to include safety planning, information regarding court process, accompaniment to hearings, and liaisoning with courts/prosecutors on victims’ behalf. Their weekly/monthly Support Groups focus on recovery, domestic and sexual violence, women’s issues, self-esteem, restorative parenting, concerned persons, and others. Alexandra House’s Youth Services includes individual advocacy and support groups offered in 15 high schools/alternative programs in six school districts; healthy relationship classroom education; summer youth and family outreach; and support/education groups on-site at Lino Lakes Juvenile Shelter Program. Finally, their Community Education/ Professional Training program engages the community in understanding, responding to, and preventing domestic and sexual violence through community education, professional training, and building awareness via web, social media, blogging, press releases, articles, and more.
