Minnesota man and woman facing each other consensually

When something is consensual, it means that all parties involved agree to the limits of what they are doing.

Safe sexual relations that involve consent are:

  • Agreed-upon: Both parties agree to and respect each other’s boundaries.
  • Considerate: Approved of and enjoyed by each person.
  • Trusting: Individuals can depend on the honesty of the other person.
  • Nonviolent: Never done with intent of harm.

It is not consent if there is:

  • Doubt: You did not specifically give consent.
  • Disrespect: Your partner ignores your boundaries.
  • Fear: You are afraid to say “no.”
  • Intimidation: You say “yes” to avoid conflict or harm.

CONSENT = FRIES (Per Planned Parenthood)

  • Freely given:  In a clear mind, free of coercion, guilt, manipulation
  • Reversible:  Consent can be taken back at ANY time
  • Informed:  Informing and being informed of any risks, age, boundaries, etc.
  • Enthusiastic:  Visually or verbally excited
  • Specific:  Who, what, when, where, avoid confusion, every new act is a new conversation, yes once does not equal yes every time
